Lions Eye Institute for Transplant & Research Hosts Annual Competition
Studies show that only 30 percent of blind adults gain full-time employment, but 90 percent of those who beat the odds are Braille readers. To encourage Braille literacy, one of the most overlooked literacy issues in America, the Lions Eye Institute for Transplant & Research will host the West Florida Regional Braille Challenge.
On March 1, 2013, more than 50 blind and visually impaired students from all over Central and West Florida competed in hopes of moving on to the national competition. The Florida Medical Clinic Foundation of Caring assisted with underwriting the costs of the event.
About the Braille Challenge™

This unique competition is a national program of Braille Institute of America, Inc., and serves to encourage blind children of all ages to fine-tune their Braille skills, which are essential to their success in the sighted world. Florida Instructional Materials Center for the Visually Impaired, the Lions Eye Institute Foundation, and Tampa Lighthouse for the Blind are the sponsors of this regional competition.
