The “Father’s Day Family Walk/Jog” was created by Columbia Restaurant President Richard Gonzmart. His goal is to raise awareness of the disease and the need for testing, as well as to help fund prostate cancer research.
Foundation of Caring Community Leadership Board Member Jeff Billiet suggested the Foundation get involved in promoting the event. “I’ve known Richard for a while, and I wanted to get involved in one of his community events. Most of us know someone who has been impacted by cancer, and prostate cancer is one of those types of cancer guys sometimes don’t want to talk about. Our goal with this event is to spread awareness, to get a conversation started about a disease that is every bit as lethal as breast cancer but is talked about much less.”
Jeff said he hopes the event will inspire guys to get educated, get checked and continue a conversation about prostate cancer even after the event. He said he is proud that the Foundation of Caring has chosen to help get the word out about an event that will both raise awareness and raise funds to find a cure for this terrible disease.
According to the American Cancer Society, one man out of six will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and one of 35 will die every year. Prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in American men, second only to lung cancer.
The Advanced Prostate Cancer Collaboration (APCC) is working with Moffitt and other leading USA cancer centers to find new treatments that can help kill prostate cancer or help men avoid it altogether.
