The BEST (Brain Expansion and Scholastic Training) program, founded by Dr. Dexter Frederick, makes a positive impact on local students in grades 5 through 12. Originated in 2004, the mission of the program is to create a positive long lasting impact on the lives of underrepresented and disadvantaged youth. BEST is dedicated to mapping a successful path for every student, and preparing them for academic success and community service. BEST promotes high level academic excellence by teaching memory skills and fostering partnerships with businesses, educators, community groups, youth and parents.
FMC Foundation of Caring Board Member Wendy Crosier was present on Saturday, September 12th when Dr. Frederick received the Community Hero Award, presented by the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Hero Award honors local individuals who have made a positive impact in the community.
Over the past couple of years; FMC Foundation of Caring has had the privilege of supporting Dr. Frederick and the BEST program. The Foundation of Caring has awarded more than $45,000 in grant funds to BEST, with the latest funding designated to implementing the BEST program in Pasco County.
Dr. Frederick states that he started the BEST program when he learned that economically disadvantaged youth were interested in health careers as nurses, social workers, pharmacists, dentists or doctors, but had no idea of the path to take and the dedication required to reach their dreams. “I realized at that time there was a dichotomy between students’ passion for a health care career, and the reality of the day to day work that needs to be done in school and the community. If there is not a blending of the two, passions will die and poor choices will be made in school and in society.”
